Spacebar Speed Counter · current implementation
    Durations5, 10 or 30 seconds
InputSpace with the test panel focused
    Held keyBrowser auto-repeat is ignored
OutputHits per second and hits in each one-second bucket

    Focus the panel before starting

Choose a duration, click the test panel to focus it, then press and release Space. The first Space press begins the timed window. Pressing Space while a page button elsewhere has focus does not enter this test, which keeps ordinary page navigation available. Within the test panel the Space handler prevents page scrolling. You can leave the panel with Tab or select New run to reset the session.

Count presses rather than keyboard repeat

Operating systems normally generate repeated keydown events while a key is held. This counter ignores events whose repeat property is true, so a long hold contributes one hit. The result therefore reflects discrete presses received by the browser. It does not inspect electrical switch actuation or measure the physical travel of a key. A device or driver that generates distinct synthetic presses can still change what the browser sees.

    Read the pace chart

Each bar shows how many accepted hits occurred within one second of the run. Taller early bars followed by shorter bars can indicate a burst followed by fatigue, although a short interruption can produce the same shape. Final hits per second divide the total by the complete duration. Compare five-second bursts with other five-second bursts, and use a longer duration when you want to observe whether your rhythm stays consistent.

Make the experiment easy to repeat

Use one finger and the same keyboard for a baseline, then deliberately change one condition at a time. Keep the panel focused and the browser visible. Switching tabs cancels a timed session. A missing press can come from focus, keyboard firmware, operating-system shortcuts or hardware, so confirm the behavior with slow isolated presses before attributing it to speed. The keyboard ghosting tester is a better place to examine simultaneous combinations. Take breaks between longer sessions instead of chasing a high number through discomfort.

Your result stays on this device

Completed game results are saved in this browser when local storage is available. Bests and recent history describe this device’s saved runs, not a public leaderboard. Changing browsers, clearing site data or using private browsing can remove them. Copy score writes only the visible result summary to your clipboard when you request it; sharing is your choice. Clear local game data removes scores, daily completion markers and the saved 2048 board for this origin. No game result is uploaded, and the games remain usable when persistent storage is unavailable. Use the rule table to check what the active mode measures before comparing another session. A changed duration, input method or grid difficulty can change the task even when the displayed score uses the same unit.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does holding Space only count once?

Auto-repeat keydown events are ignored; this measures deliberate presses.

    Why did the page scroll?

The test intercepts Space only while its large panel has focus. Click that panel first.

    What does the chart show?

The count of accepted Space presses in each one-second bucket of the current run.

Are 5-second and 30-second scores comparable?

They test different durations. Local bests and history are stored separately for each duration.
