Choose the right starting image
A 100 KB budget can work well for avatars, small article images and form photos. Large camera images need resizing as well as quality reduction. Keep the original until the receiving website accepts the result. If text in an image becomes hard to read, choose a larger budget or submit the original through another supported route.
How the compression works
Choose a quick 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB preset, or enter a custom ceiling. The compressor decodes the image locally, draws it onto a browser canvas and exports a JPEG. It starts with a maximum width of 2,400 pixels, never enlarging the source. It searches JPEG quality between 0.05 and 0.95, keeping the highest tested quality whose encoded file fits the requested byte budget. If even the lowest quality is too large, both dimensions are reduced by 20 percent and the search repeats. The result panel shows the actual output bytes, dimensions and format, rather than an estimated percentage. The tool reports an error if it cannot meet the limit.
What changes in the output
The target uses decimal kilobytes: one KB equals 1,000 bytes. This conservative choice also fits a ceiling expressed in binary KiB with the same number. Output is always JPEG, so transparent areas are filled with white and animation is not preserved. Canvas re-encoding generally drops source metadata, but this tool is not a certified metadata scrubber. Small text and sharp graphics can suffer from lossy encoding. For logos requiring transparency, use a PNG conversion instead. Each operation handles one image, up to 25 MB and 40 megapixels.
Check before submitting
Download the processed image, open it and inspect faces, edges and any required text. Compare both the dimensions and byte count with the receiving site’s current requirements. Smaller is not automatically better: choose the largest acceptable budget when clarity matters. Your selected image is processed in the page; there is no file-upload endpoint and no need to create an account. Closing or clearing the page removes the working result from this interface. The original file on your device is not overwritten.
Frequently asked questions
Is the size exact?
The file is at or below the chosen ceiling; it is not padded to an exact byte count.
Will the photo be accepted for a passport or visa?
Acceptance depends on the authority’s current photo rules, including pose, background and dimensions. Compression alone cannot establish compliance.
Can I preserve transparency?
This compressor exports JPEG. Use the PNG converter when you need transparent pixels.
